Mudra therapy is an age old effective therapy propounded by ancient sages. Mudra means hand gestures which are made for the betterment of physical body. We believe that our five fingers correspond to five natural elements i.e. thumb embodies 'fire' or agni, the index finger embodies 'air' or vayu, the middle finger 'sky' or Akash, the ring finger embodies 'earth' or prithvi and the little finger signifies 'water' or jal.

These hand mudras effects the body ailments naturally and affectively leaving no side effects. This therapy is as old as our culture and given and practiced by our seers through them we have been doing it since thousands of years. These mudras prevent specific physical and mental problems naturally. They should be practiced with both the hands facing towards the sky and sitting in a padmasana or sukhasana. Mudras must be performed with utmost care ideally in the morning atleast for five minutes everyday.

Here are the various types of mudras for health:

Gyan mudra (mudra of knowledge):

In this mudra touch the tip of your index finger with the thumb tip and the other three fingers stretched out. It is known as knowledge mudra that means it enhances the knowledge. The tip of the thumb is the centers of pituitary and endocrine glands and when these points of thumbs are pressed in this therapy the two glands get active to work affectively.

Proper time

This mudra can be performed at any time before or after the meal, sitting or standing whenever or wherever you want.

  • Aggravates concentration and insomnia.
  • Reduces the symptoms of hysteria, depression and other psychological and mental disorders if practice regularly.
Prithvi mudra (mudra of knowledge):

In this mudra the tip of ring finger touches the tip of thumb while other fingers stretched out.
As it is known as earth mudra it reduces the symptoms or diseases related to physical weaknesses.

Proper time

Like the first mudra prithvi mudra can also be performed at any time of the day.

Varuna mudra (mudra of water):

In this mudra the tip of the little finger touches the tip of the thumb while the other fingers stretched out.
This mudra balances the water content in the body and helps in preventing the disorders related to deficiency of water.

Proper time

This mudra can be performed at any time in the day. There is no specific duration for it.

  • Helps reducing pain in gastroenteritis and prevents muscle shrinkage.
Vayu mudra (mudra of air):

In this mudra keep the index finger at base of the thumb and press the thumb keeping the other fingers straight.
Vayu mudra debars the diseases occur due to the imbalance of the air.

Proper time

This mudra must be performed regularly for about 45 minutes to reduce the severity of disease.

For good results practice this mudra for two months and you may see the results in 12-24 hours.

Shunya mudra (mudra of emptiness):

In this mudra keep the middle finger at the mount of Venus and press it with thumb. This mudra helps in reducing dullness of the body.

Proper time

To prevent the disease this mudra must be practiced for 40 to 60 minutes regularly until you get the best results.

Health advantages
  • Helps in preventing ear aches within minutes.
  • Useful in removing deafness and for mentally retarded except for infants.
Surya mudra (mudra of sun):

In this mudra the ring finger is bent and pressed with thumb. Surya mudra is beneficial for the diseases related to thyroid and cholesterol.

Proper time

This mudra can be practiced regularly twice in a day for about 5- 10 minutes.

  • Surya mudra keeps check on thyroid and cholesterol and also helps in reducing weight.
  • Treats problems such as indigestion and anxiety.
Prana mudra (mudra of life):

In this mudra keep the little and ring finger down in order to touch the tip of these fingers with the tip of thumb and while remaining fingers stretched out. Mudra of life gives the strength and power to live the life at its fullest.

It can be performed at any time of the day.

Apana mudra (mudra of digestion):

In this mudra the tips of the middle finger and ring finger touches the tips of thumb and the other two fingers stretched out.
Mudra of digestion as its name suggests helps in preventing problems of digestion and stimulates the excretory system.

Proper time

This mudra can be performed at any time before or after the meal, sitting or standing whenever or wherever you want.

Apana Vayu mudra (mudra of heart):

In this mudra the tips of middle and ring finger touches the tips of thumb and index finger remains at the thumb base while the little finger stretched out.

Mudra of heart regulates the cardiac muscles and keeps a check on heart. This also helps in reducing flatulence and gas.

Proper time

It can be practiced at anytime and for better results perform it regularly twice in a day for about 15 minutes. BP and heart patients must practice it regularly.

  • It helps in proper functioning of the heart by regularizing the palpitation and minimizes the risk of heart attack.
  • Checks the gas problem.
  • Helps in proper functioning of excretory system.
Linga mudra (mudra of heat):

In this mudra keep the fingers of both the hands interlocked and keep the thumb of left hand vertically straight and encircle it with the index finger.

Proper time

It can be practiced at anytime but it should not be done regularly as it generates heat in the body.

Health advantages
  • Stops the making of phlegm and strengthens the lungs.
  • Reduces the symptoms of cold and bronchial infection.
